Coffee and a snack at Barvak in Barva, Heredia

Costa Rica grows some of the best coffee in the world, and I have enjoyed the opportunity to try it here. The beans taste fresher than they would back home as shipping time decreases the taste.1 And with savings on shipping, the coffee costs less too.

Don Mayo is a Costa Rican coffee producer that I keep returning to, partially because it runs a café in walking distance to our home. I can walk one kilometer to access coffee that was grown less than two hours away. And Don Mayo’s beans, when bought from the cafe, were usually roasted (in country) less than a month ago. It’s a dream. In most countries, coffee requires dependence on the international supply chain, but when you buy local here, you really buy local.

But why is Costa Rican coffee so good? Many minute details make up the quality of a cup, from soil to pour. The two primary factors are the quality of the bean and the type of brew.
